Segesta was one of the main cities of the Elimi, a people of peninsular culture and tradition, a population of Italic origin. Segesta soon reached a leading role in the Mediterranean basin. His centuries-old hostility with Selinunte was relevant, whose battle (415 BC) also involved Athens and Carthage. In 408 BC thanks to the Carthaginian intervention Selinunte was destroyed. Segesta in the following centuries lived its period of splendor until 307 BC. where it was conquered and destroyed by Agatocle of Syracuse Outside the city walls, along the ancient access roads to the city, there are two important sacred places: the Doric temple (430-420 BC) and the sanctuary of Contrada Mango (6th-5th century BC).
